How to Clean and Care for Handcrafted Wooden Home Decor

Clean handcrafted wooden decor with a dry or slightly damp cloth and never use chemical cleaners or polish. For terracotta mosaic plates, use a soft cotton cloth on the glass inlay. For glass aquariums and terrariums, wipe with a lightly damp cloth and dry immediately.

Every material in handcrafted decor has its own personality and its own needs. Understanding this is the difference between a piece that lasts twenty years and one that degrades in two.

Unpolished Wood โ€” Driftwood, Teak, and Carved Pieces

All wooden pieces at BAGUS are intentionally left unpolished. This is a deliberate choice, not a shortcut. Unpolished wood retains its natural grain, texture, and character, the things that make it beautiful in the first place.

Polish, lacquer, and wax create a barrier that hides the wood's natural surface. Over time, polished wood also becomes harder to maintain because the coating begins to peel or yellow.

For daily care, wipe with a soft dry cloth. If the piece needs more than dusting, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Never leave moisture sitting on wood.

For the driftwood mushroom sets and carved bird figurines, a dry brush or soft cloth is all you need. These are indoor pieces. Keep them away from bathroom humidity, kitchen steam, and open windows during monsoon.

For the Last Supper teak carving, currently one piece in stock, dust with a soft dry cloth along the direction of the carving. Teak is naturally oil-rich and highly resistant to moisture, but avoid prolonged water exposure and direct sunlight all the same.

Glass Aquariums and Terrariums

Each BAGUS glass aquarium takes six months to make. The glass, wood, and stone are fitted together slowly and by hand, which also means care should reflect that investment.

If your glass aquarium is being used as a terrarium with plants inside, the primary care concern is the glass exterior and the wood or stone base.

Wipe the glass with a lightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive sponges or chemical glass cleaners, which scratch the surface.

The wood and stone base should be kept dry. If moisture reaches the base from watering plants inside, wipe it off promptly. The natural stone and wood grain that make each piece unique are also what make them sensitive to sustained moisture.

Because no two BAGUS glass aquariums share the same structure, also pay attention to how the glass sits on its base over time and check periodically that the mounting remains stable.

Terracotta Mosaic Plates

Our terracotta plates with round glass mosaic inlay are made for both daily use and display. The care is straightforward but specific.

For the mosaic, clean gently with a soft cotton cloth. The glass mosaic pieces are set into the terracotta surface, so avoid abrasive cloths or sponges that could loosen the inlay over time.

For the terracotta body, wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Terracotta is porous and absorbs moisture, so avoid soaking. If used as tableware, ensure the surface is fully dry before storing.

Do not put these plates in a dishwasher. Hand wash only, gently, and dry immediately.

Hand-Carved Bird Figurines

The hand-carved and hand-painted bird figurines including parus, robin, rainbow finch, and goldfinch are among the most delicate pieces in the BAGUS collection. The carving is done by the men, the painting by the women, in artisan communities in Indonesia. The paint applied is natural and sits on the wood surface rather than being sealed under lacquer.

Dust gently with a dry soft brush. Avoid damp cloths on the painted surfaces. Keep away from direct sunlight, which fades natural pigments over time. These are display pieces. A shelf, a windowsill away from direct sun, a bookcase.

Rattan Wall Decor

Dust rattan wall art with a soft dry brush regularly. Avoid water entirely on rattan. Moisture causes natural fibres to weaken and eventually break, and once a woven piece is damaged by water it cannot be restored.

Direct sunlight is the main enemy of rattan. It fades the natural colour and makes the fibres brittle over time. Indoor placement away from south-facing windows is all that is needed to keep rattan wall pieces beautiful for years.

If your rattan wall piece has dust in the weave that a brush cannot reach, use a can of compressed air from a distance. This clears the weave without damaging the fibres.

Tribal Masks, Tiki Masks, and Aboriginal Masks

Wall-mounted masks are low-maintenance. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or a very soft brush in the carved grooves. Avoid moisture entirely. Keep away from kitchen humidity and bathroom steam.

For masks with natural pigment painting, follow the same guidance as the bird figurines. No direct sunlight, no damp cloths on painted surfaces.

Palm Leaf and Monstera Leaf Wall Frames

These frames are lightweight and low-maintenance. Dust with a soft dry cloth. Avoid moisture. Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the natural leaf finish.

Banana Bark Wall Hangings

Dust banana bark hangings with a soft dry brush. Like rattan, avoid water entirely. Natural fibres and moisture do not mix. Keep away from direct sunlight to preserve the natural colour of the bark and any natural dye used in the weaving.
